• Stem changing -ar and -er verbs, such as pensar, have no stem changes in the
preterite. However, -ir verbs that have a stem change in the present tense also
have a stem change in the preterite.
• If the -ir verb has an e-ie or e-i stem change in the present tense, such as
servir, in the preterite the e will change to an i in the él/ella/Ud. and
ellos/ellas/Uds. forms.
• If the -ir verb has an o-ue stem change in the present tense, such as dormir, in
the preterite the o will change to a u in the él/ella/Ud. and ellos/ellas/Uds.

Stem changing -ir verbs in the present tense also have a stem change in the preterite tense. The changes are e → i and o → u and take place in the Ud. / él / ella and Uds. / ellos / ellas forms only.

Here are the preterite forms of pedir, sentir, and dormir:

pedí pedimos pediste pedisteis pidió pidieron sentí sentimos sentiste sentisteis sintió sintieron dormí dormimos dormiste dormisteis durmió durmieron

Other verbs like pedir (i) and sentir (i) are: divertirse (to have fun, preferir (to prefer), sugerir (suggest), vestirse (to dress oneself).

Another verb like dormir( to sleep) (u) is: morir (to die).
