¡Qué parrillada!
Read the conversation between Mr. Rubio and his students at their class barbecue. Then, answer the questions that follow in complete sentences.

SR. RUBIO: Muchachos, den una caminata en este sendero pero tengan cuidado. PABLO: Señor Rubio, yo no quiero caminar más. Tengo hambre. ¿Cuándo vamos a comer? SR.
SR. RUBIO: No puede ser. ¿Dónde está la carne de res?
PABLO: No queda nada dentro, señor. Creo que Ud. se olvidó de traerla.
SR. RUBIO: Lo siento, chicos. ¡Hagan ahora unos sándwiches de mayonesa y mostaza! No tenemos que esperar.

1. ¿Por qué no quiere Pablo dar una caminata?
2. ¿Quién hace la fogata?
3. ¿Para qué es la fogata?

Usted and ustedes commands (p. 382)
• Use the usted command form to tell someone older than you what to do or what
not to do. Use the ustedes form to tell a group of people what to do or what not
to do.
• Affirmative and negative usted and ustedes commands have the same spelling
changes and irregular forms as negative tú commands.
• The commands for viajar (to travel), comer (to eat), and servir (to serve) are
shown below.

Usted and ustedes commands

¿Recuerdas?

You already know how to give negative commands.

No prepares los frijoles todavía.
No enciendas la fogata.
No salgas de este sendero.

To give an affirmative or negative command in the Ud. or Uds. form, use the present-tense yo form as the stem just as you did for negative commands.

Add -e or -en for -ar verbs.

cortar corto Señor, corte las chuletas de cerdo.

probar pruebo Señores, prueben la carne asada.

Affirmative and negative Ud. and Uds. commands have the same spelling changes and irregular forms as negative commands.

The same rules you know for commands regarding pronouns apply to Ud. and Uds. commands as well.

Attach pronouns to affirmative commands.

—¿Dónde ponemos la leña?

—Pónganla en un lugar seco.

With negative commands, pronouns go right
before the verb.

—¿Encendemos la fogata ahora?

—No, no la enciendan todavía.

Add -a or -an for -er and -ir verbs.

perder pierdo No pierdan Uds. los fósforos.

servir sirvo Señorita, sirva la ensalada.
