Spanish 3 4-13-09 Purple day periods 1 and 2

Tarea: 4-13-09 due 4-17-09 500 attempts due by this coming Friday 4-17-09. If you did complete the 200 attempts that was due for today 4-13-09 all you have to do is 300 attempts. The reason for this is because I forgot to update the blog over the weekend.

As we start to wrap up this chapter 3 I want you to be aware that there will be a speaking assessment that you will pass off with me on your own time. You will be given some in class time to complete the speaking assessment but the majority of you will have to plan accordingly and get it passes off with me on your own time. Before school, or during advisement will be the 2 main times. After school is not an option because I am coaching baseball this year.

What can you expect to talk about on your speaking assessment? The following should help you prepare.

El subjuntivo: verbos regulares (p. 132)

• When someone gives advice, recommendations, suggestions, or demands to
another person, Spanish uses the subjunctive mood.
• A sentence that includes the subjunctive can be thought of as having two separate
halves, which are connected by the word que.
Yo recomiendo que tú hagas ejercicio. I recommend that you exercise.
• Notice that the first half (Yo recomiendo) includes a verb in the regular present
tense and introduces a suggestion, demand, etc. The second half (tú hagas
ejercicio) includes a verb in the subjunctive and tells what the first person wants
the second person to do.

• Verbs in the subjunctive form may look somewhat familiar to you because they
follow the same conjugation rules as the Ud./Uds. commands. To form verbs in
the subjunctive, follow the rules below:
1) Put the verb in the yo form of the present indicative (regular present tense).
2) Take off the -o.
3) a. For -ar verbs, add the following endings: -e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en
b. For -er and -ir verbs, add the following endings: -a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an

Mandatos negativos con tú (p. 122)
• Negative tú commands, used to informally tell one person not to do something,
are formed differently from affirmative tú commands. Use the following rules to
form negative tú commands:
1) Put the verb in the yo form of the present tense.
2) Get rid of the -o at the end of the verb.
3) For -ar verbs, add the ending -es.
For -er and -ir verbs, add the ending -as.

• Following these rules, verbs that have irregular yo forms or stem changes in the
present tense will have the same stem changes in the negative tú commands.

• Affirmative tú commands are informal commands telling one person to do
something. To form them, you use the present indicative él/ella/Ud. form of the
verb. Note that this also applies to stem-changing verbs.
