• Remember that hubo and había are forms of haber. Both words mean “there was”
or “there were.” Look at these rules:
• Use hubo to say that an event (such as a fire) took place.
Hubo un incendio ayer.
• Use había to describe a situation in the past.
Había mucho humo en el edificio.
